Predation by Dr Hamish Foote

How can still life painting explore the traditional notions of good and evil in the relationship between indigenous and exotic species?

The investigation will:
• Generate a series of paintings and writing that reveals and probes examples of both mutualistic andvparasitic relationships between exotic and native species in the Auckland region
• Raise awareness regarding bio control. In particular, that public as well as council interest and
intervention is required to control invasive species and protect threatened indigenous species
• Provide an account of the relationship between culture and nature i.e. how the creation of a Neo-
European environments as well as ongoing intervention has resulted in the current Auckland region character
• Demonstrate that a significant part of the foundation for much of scientific endeavour today has itsvroots in the empirical observation and representation of the natural world characterised by 15th, 16thand 17th century European still life art
